Based on national averages for 2003, projects yielding the highest percent of cost recovered were the addition of a deck, which returned 104.2 percent of the cost, siding replacement at 98.1 percent, bathroom addition (95 percent for a midrange project), and the addition of an attic bedroom (92.8 percent). Seattle homeowners tended to enjoy higher returns on most remodeling investments than national averages.
Researchers emphasize their findings are intended as a guideline, noting a variety of factors can affect both the cost of remodeling and the resale value of homes. The study also acknowledges "costs for materials, subcontractors and labor can vary considerably not only in different parts of the country, but also among remodeling companies operating in the same market."
